5 Mindsets We Can Take from Our Inner Athlete

As entrepreneurs in the health and fitness industry, we know athletes. We work with athletes and we are athletes.But too many of us keep our entrepreneurial mind and our athletic mind separate.

Here are five common mindsets to can stretch from our athletic world into our business world:

1. Maintaining Persistence

Athletes know that they’re not going to reach their goals their first try. It takes practice, trial and error, and new strategies to run faster, lift more, and train harder. Athletes will keep going until they reach their goals.

For whatever reason, not many entrepreneurs view persistence the same way. If you know you’re not going to achieve overnight success in athletics, you shouldn’t expect it in business either. You need to practice, fail, re-evaluate, and move forward. Most importantly, you should never give up.

2. Practicing Humility

Athletes know that for each person they beat in competition, there is another person out there who is better. In athletics, there is always someone in the world who is better, and when success is determined by how fast you can run or how much weight you can lift, it’s easy to tell who the next competitor is. This keeps athletes always improving on themselves.

Like athletes, entrepreneurs should always recognize that no matter how far they come, there is still a long way to go. Practicing humility can ensure you remain motivated to continue moving forward.

3. Being Vulnerable

Athletes know that being vulnerable is the only way they can grow. When they step outside their comfort zone to run faster or train harder, they’re exposing themselves to failure or injury. But if they decide to stay in an area where they’ll never get hurt, they’re not going to go anywhere.

Business works the same way. It is vulnerable to try something where you might fail, but if you don’t try, you won’t move ahead. That first step outside the comfort zone is where success begins.

4. Finding the Positive

Athletes know bad things can happen. Injuries occur, failure happens, and the unexpected should be expected. But they also take each negative situation and find the positive. They find lessons and apply them to their training.

Entrepreneurs should expect the same. Bad things will happen. If nothing is going wrong, you’re not challenging yourself enough. But for each thing that goes wrong, find a way to make it right. Evaluate what happened and fix the situation so it doesn’t happen again.

5. Don’t Regret

Athletes know how easy it is to begin having regrets. When athletes don’t perform as well as they wish they had, they can quickly begin looking for things they should have done differently. But they also know this regretful thinking isn’t beneficial to anyone.

As entrepreneurs, we should also learn to live without regret. If something doesn’t go as planned, change your strategy for the future. Regretting past decisions only keeps you living in the past and will do nothing for your future.

When completing your weekend workouts, consider your mindsets when you’re in athlete-mode. Are you willing to do whatever it takes to reach your health and fitness goals?
