What the Sports Legends Can Teach Us About Leadership
As entrepreneurs in the health and fitness industry, many of us idolize athletes and sports legends, but most of us don’t think of the lessons we can learn from them.
The world’s greatest athletes didn’t get there by showing up and playing their sport. It took dedication, hard work, and most of all, teamwork and leadership. And just like the captain of a sports team, the leader of a business needs to find a way to get everyone on the same page and working towards a common goal.
Being a successful athlete and a successful entrepreneur aren’t that different. Just take a look at these leadership lessons from some of the world’s greatest athletes:
1. A Great Leader Makes Other People Better.
As one of the best basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan knew he wouldn’t get anywhere if his team wasn’t also working to their full potential. Instead of assuming he could do it all on his own, he found ways to encourage his teammates to work just as hard.
As a true leader, you need to find each team member’s unique skills and help them elevate those strengths. If you only focus on improving yourself, your team isn’t going to be able to help you the way they should.
2. Leaders Make an Example.
As one of the best soccer stars around, David Beckham is also an exceptional leader. But he doesn’t just tell his teammates what he needs them to do – he shows them. He gains the respect of his team – and the world – by begin an amazing sport both on and off the field, setting an example of what his teammates should do.
To be a great leader, you need to practice what you preach. Leaders fail when they say one thing to their teams and then do the complete opposite yourself. Just because you are the leader of your team doesn’t mean you should get special privileges. You are part of the team, so you should follow the same standards.
3. Leaders View Everything as a Team Effort.
When professional racer Michael Schumacher had to exit the Chinese Grand Prix early due to an improperly attached wheel, he didn’t place blame. Even as a dedicated, and sometimes ruthless, athlete, he didn’t lash out at his team members for making a mistake that cost him the race.
Leaders recognize that things can happen, and as unfortunate as it is when they do, alienating one individual does nothing. As part of a team, each member needs to work together to ensure everything run smoothly. When one person falls behind, the entire team falls behind.
4. Leaders Always Think About the Future.
Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky’s father famously advised him, “Skate to where the puck is going, not to where it has been.” When he gave this bit of advice to who would soon become one of the greatest hockey players ever, he probably wasn’t thinking about how it applied to the business world.
When you’re leading your team, you need to always consider where you are going. You need to consider where the “puck” is going before your competition and figure out a way to get there first.
While the connection between sports and business isn’t always clear, that doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
This weekend, take a look at some of your favorite athletes. What do they do differently? How do the show they are a team leader? What are they doing to make their dreams come true? You may notice that their mindset is more like an entrepreneur than you might think.
